A Double Celebration at Bethesda: Honoring Our Director and Embracing Our Culture

Thursday, June 12 was no ordinary day at Bethesda Home and School for the Blind. It was a day wrapped in joy, gratitude, and pride. As students danced to the rhythm of culture and staff adorned vibrant traditional wear, we marked not just our much-anticipated Cultural Day but also the birthday of a woman who has become the heartbeat of Bethesda, our beloved Director—- Dr. Chioma Ohakwe. The air was filled with excitement as the two celebrations beautifully blended into one. Our students, full of pride and confidence, showcased the richness of Nigeria’s cultural diversity through music, dance, food, and storytelling. From Yoruba to Igbo to Hausa and beyond, the essence of unity in diversity came alive and so did the spirit of inclusion that defines Bethesda. But beyond the colourful fabrics and joyful performances, this day held deeper meaning. It was an opportunity to celebrate the quiet strength, compassion, and leadership of our Director, a woman who has poured years of her life into nurturing Bethesda into a sanctuary of learning, dignity, and hope for visually impaired people. With every smile shared and every song sung, the students paid tribute not only to their heritage but to the woman who believes in their limitless potential. Her unwavering dedication has transformed classrooms into safe spaces, and her guidance has empowered both staff and students to rise above limitations and embrace possibilities. As the cultural festivities came to a close, a special moment was reserved to honor her birthday. Staff, students, and guests gathered to sing, cheer, and present heartfelt messages and tokens of appreciation. It was a beautiful reminder that leadership is not only about vision, it is about presence, empathy, and service. At Bethesda, we are more than a school, we are a family. And on this special day, we celebrated both our roots and the woman who helps us grow. Happy Birthday to our incredible Director. May your year ahead be filled with as much love and impact as you have given to so many.
